IPL MEDICAL THERAPIES

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy is a gentle, safe and effective treatment to improve the appearance of many skin irregularities. This advanced light treatment can help to treat acne, thread veins, spider veins, uneven pigmentation, sun spots, sagging skin and many common signs of ageing. IPL can provide an incredibly targeted treatment, focusing only on the areas of concern.

IPL Treatment usually takes around 45 minutes. During this time, most clients say they usually experience a mild ‘pinging sensation’ as if being flicked by an elastic band. You can return to your normal daily activities directly after treatment. A patch test is required prior to your first treatment. Whilst improvement can be seen following 1 treatment, a course of 6 sessions is usually recommended for optimum results.

All treatments are tailored to the individual and personal experiences and results may vary. We recommend a one to one consultation with our highly trained Specialist to discuss your treatment options.

TREATMENTS

IPL Acne Therapy is an effective new light-based therapeutic therapy is now revolutionizing the treatment of acne.
Many people are left feeling lost after unsuccessfully trying an array of creams and lotions to treat acne. IPL is a reliable option for people with acne and works in three different ways.

Benefits:

  • The first is that it destroys bacteria on the skin. Whilst the underlying causes of acne vary from person to person, the cysts and blemishes themselves cannot happen without an influx of acne-causing bacteria. By destroying these bacteria, IPL removes one of the main culprits of acne.
  • The second way that IPL targets acne is that it prevents the over-production of sebum. The acne-causing bacteria feed on the sebum, and the sebum itself is what gets trapped in the pores to cause spots, so by reducing the amount of sebum being produced, it becomes more difficult for spots to form.
  • Finally, IPL dramatically reduces inflammation and stimulates collagen production, which means that red, angry spots are minimised and scarring is reduced, for a greatly improved skin texture.

IPL Therapy is also an effective skin rejuvenation treatment. The wavelengths of light raise the temperature of the targeted areas forcing elastin and collagen to be released. These natural proteins help to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles for a younger looking, more taut appearance. You will be able to notice improvement from the first treatment; however, a full course of treatments is recommended to achieve the very best results for your skin.

IPL Therapy can successfully treat unsightly thread veins on the face, chest and hands. The wavelengths of light heat and damage the walls of the blood vessels forcing them to collapse and eventually be reabsorbed by the body. Gradually the appearance of the veins fades out resulting in a much more even complexion.

The range of wavelengths deployed during IPL Therapy target the melanin (darker pigmentation) just beneath the surface of the skin. The light causes damage, which in turn causes the body to expel the damaged pigment from its system. This action reduces the appearance of uneven pigmentation by targeting only the darker areas of skin. In addition to the improvements in skin tone, skin texture is also improved thanks to the release of collagen encouraged by the treatment process.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ACNE

Our acne treatment system utilises the latest Intense Pulsed Light technology (IPL) to safely and effectively reduce the number and severity of active acne lesions, lessening the inflammation and frequency of break-outs. IPL acne treatment may be combined with a number of our other advanced treatments for optimum results.

The light emitted from the intense pulsed light system directly targets overactive sebaceous glands, greatly reducing the total number and severity of active lesions and lessing the inflammation and occurrence of break-outs. The light stimulates the production of new collagen to improve skin texture and can also reduce the appearance of red or brown areas of skin that are often associated with acne breakouts.

Prior to treatment, a consultation is conducted in which a medical history is taken to confirm suitability for treatment. There is also an opportunity for any questions you may have to be answered and time for a small patch test to be carried out*. Treatment begins with a thin layer of chilled gel being applied to the skin to help guide the light. The light guide is placed on to the skin and a short pulse of light is released. The applicator is passed over the skin several times before moving on to a neighbouring area and the process is repeated until the whole area is treated. Each pulse of light treats a large area of skin and so the duration of the treatment is very short (usually around 30 minutes). The gel is removed from the skin and the skin is moisturised. During treatment protective eye wear will be provided. Intense pulsed light acne treatment may be combined with other advanced treatments in order to achieve optimum results.

Following treatment, the number and severity of active acne lesions and break-outs will be significantly reduced. Inflammation will be calmed and skin tone and texture visibly improved.

The number of treatments necessary varies from person to person, but typically 6 intense pulsed light and 6 exfoliating treatments will result in a significant improvement. Intense pulsed light treatments should take place fortnightly and may be combined with other advanced aesthetic treatments for optimum results.

Treatment sensation varies but is often described as a “flick of an elastic band”. Typically no anaesthesia is required and most clients describe the discomfort as moderate and tolerable.

Immediately after treatment the skin may appear red and a warm, tingling sensation may be felt. Typically the skin is cooled to ease any discomfort and a calming gel is applied.

fine lines and wrinkles

With the Skin rejuvenation treatment the light is absorbed by the melanin and the superficial blood vessels in the skin and the ensuing heat reaction destroys the melanin in the keratinocytes, coagulates blood vessels and stimulates collagen production.

First, we will assess the area that we will work on and clean it thoroughly. It might be necessary to shave the area to be treated (only if hair is present). A thick layer of cooling gel will then be applied to the skin to help aid the treatment and to help protect the skin during the treatment procedure. Next, we will enter your details into the system and the machine will give us an energy setting that is suitable for you. We then select the correct hand piece to treat the area and with each shot we will assess the area and make some adjustments. It is important that you feel some sensation during the treatment however you must not feel too uncomfortable.

A slight Erythema is seen immediately after the treatment and this will disappear in 12 hours in some cases 1-2days. The areas of pigmentation will turn darker. The pigmentation will become darker almost grey/black colour and the skin will take on a “dirty look” as the skin sloughs off in 3-10 days. A cold compress can be applied at the conclusion of the treatment and an application of Aloe Vera Gel is necessary. It is advisable to use 100% Aloe Vera gel for the next few days to reduce any continuing redness.

Usually 3 to 6 treatments are needed for maximum results, through small lesions may clear in just a single session. Repeat treatments are usually taken at 4 to 6 weeks intervals.

After treatment the area may feel warm for a few hours. Particularly delicate areas such the cheeks or decolletage can be red and slightly swollen for up to 48 hours. Though uncommon, there is some risk of a small blister forming and of temporary lightening or darkening of the skin.

THREAD VEINS

Our red vein removal system utilises the latest Intense Pulsed Light technology (IPL) to safely and effectively provide long term solution to facial vascular concerns such as rosacea, thread veins and red spots as well as certain unsightly leg veins.

Our intense pulsed light system emits light which is readily absorbed by blood vessels, heating them to a point where they are destroyed. Following treatment, the vessels quickly clear as they are reabsorbed by the body, leaving little or no trace of the original lesion.

There is also an opportunity for any questions you may have to be answered and time for a small patch test to be carried out*. Treatment begins with a thin layer of chilled gel being applied to the skin to aid light absorption by the vessel. The light applicator is then place on the skin and a short pulse of light is released. The applicator is then moved to the neighbouring area and the process is repeated until the entire area has been treated. The chilled gel is removed and the area cooled. During treatment, protective eye wear will be provided.

Most people are suitable for treatment, with the best results often achieved by clients who have fair skin, for whom there is also less risk of side effects. The best response tends to be seen with facial thread veins, spider naevi and rosacea.

Following treatment, vessels at the treatment site will quickly clear as they are reabsorbed by the body, leaving little-to-no trace of the original lesion. Skin tone will appear more even and the complexion healthier and brighter.

PIGMENTATION (&AGE SPOTS)

Our pigmentation removal system utilises the latest Intense Pulsed Light technology (IPL) to safely and effectively provide long term solution to pigmentation concerns caused by sun damage such as freckles, sun spots and liver spots.

Our intense pulsed light system releases short pulses of filtered light that is readily absorbed by the high concentration of melanin found within freckles, sun spots and liver spots. The rapid absorption of light energy heats the melanin and causes destruction of the melanin-rich cells.

Most people are suitable for treatment, except for very dark skinned or tanned individuals. Large, dark, mottled or raised pigmentation cannot be treated, however and may need to be checked by a dermatologist. Large, dark moles should not be treated, nor should lesions covering a large part of the body. The pigmented marks that respond best to IPL treatment tend to be superficial lesions caused by sun damage including sun spots and freckles.

Following treatment, pigmented lesions such as freckles and sun spots will eventually fade and ‘flake’ away, leaving a fresher, brighter and more even complexion.

The number of treatments will depend on the type and size of the pigmented lesion but typically 1 to 6 sessions are required at 4 to 6 weeks intervals.

Treatment sensation varies but is often described as a “flick of an elastic band”. Typically no anaesthesia is required and most clients describe the discomfort as moderate and tolerable.

The skin that surrounds the pigmented lesion may become red immediately after treatment and may continue to feel warm for the first few days. Treated lesions will darken and may appear more obvious before they fade and ‘flake’ away. A small blister may form or the skin may temporarily become lighter or darker.
